Cape Town – Not much is known about The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's six-week break from royal duties, but locals in Canada where the royals reportedly spent Christmas, have spotted Harry and Meghan – and have the sweetest stories to share about Their Royal Highnesses.
A spokesperson for the royals said the family is "enjoying the warmth of the Canadian people and the beauty of the landscape with their young son". They were recently spotted hiking on Vancouver Island.
While out on New Year's Day for a picnic and hike in the same area, Iliya Pavlovic and Asymina Kantorowicz, a local couple were taking selfies with the greenery in the background when they noticed a group standing nearby, "one of which was approaching," Asymina said, reports CTV News Vancouver Island.
The couple was going through the pictures when a woman approached and asked if they needed someone to take a photo for them. "Sure," they said. "I didn't see who she was at that time."
Asymina said they were more focused on how familiar another member of the group looked – Abigail Spencer, an actress from Suits – so she didn't quite realise the woman she was actually striking a pose for was none other than Meghan Markle.
"I froze up. I actually couldn't believe who it was. Then I looked over to the side, and that's when I realised Prince Harry was standing there. I kept looking back and forth like, 'Is this actually happening?'"
"In that moment the only thing I could think to say: 'There's only so much that selfie sticks can do'.
"She laughed and responded with something like, 'We'll have to do better,' and then Harry said, 'No pressure.'"
After taking a few snaps of the couple, she handed the phone back. "Happy New Year!" the Duchess of Sussex said.
Looking back now Asymina said she was "in shock", but the couple "didn't want to make it a big deal".
"But then we both called our moms to tell them," she added.
