  • Kristen Stewart has been cast to play Princess Diana in upcoming movie, Spencer.
  • The film will be directed by Jackie filmmaker Pablo Larraín.
  • Production of the film will begin in 2021.

For her latest role, Kristen Stewart will play Princess Diana in an upcoming drama directed by Pablo Larrain.

The movie, titled Spencer, will be set in the early 1990s and will centre on three days during the Christmas holidays when Diana decided that her marriage to Prince Charles was not working out.

On casting the Twilight actress in the role, Pablo told Deadline that "she is one of the great actors around today".

"To do this well, you need something very important in film, which is mystery. Kristen can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile and ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need. The combination of those elements made me think of her."

The Jackie director revealed that the movie won't deal with Diana's death but will focus on her marriage to Charles and her relationship with her sons Prince William and Prince Harry.

Pablo told the publication that he has always been fascinated by the Royal Family.

"Diana is such a powerful icon, where millions and millions of people, not just women, but many people around the world felt empathy toward her in her life.

"We decided to get into a story about identity, and around how a woman decides somehow, not to be the queen. She's a woman who, in the journey of the movie, decides and realises that she wants to be the woman she was before she met Charles."

Other actresses who have played Princess Diana include Naomi Watts in the 2013 movie Diana, Amy Seccombe in the TV movie Diana: A Tribute To The People's Princess, Lesley Harcourt in the Hallmark movie William & Catherine, A Royal Love Story and Emma Corrin will play Lady Di in the fifth season of the televison series, The Crown.
