Cape Town – Disney's The Lion King has reached a big milestone at the South African box office.

Now in its sixth week on the circuit, the live-action version has passed R100 million, making it the third film in history to do so.

The film is now a member of the R100 million club following Black Panther last year and Avengers: Endgame which was released earlier this year

According to Disney Africa, Walt Disney Studios releases now account for the top 4 films of all time at the South African Box Office, including  Avengers: Infinity War released in 2018

"We are thrilled at the overwhelming response that South African audiences have shown The Lion King, a story grounded on the continent that celebrates so much of the creativity and beauty of what Africa has to offer," says Christine Service, Senior Vice President of The Walt Disney Company Africa.

Directed by Jon Favreau the movie boasts an A-list cast including Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon and Dr. John Kani as Rafiki.

South African composer Lebo M features on the soundtrack with former Idols SA winner Khaya Mthethwa, the official choral director.
