What it's about:

Amy has a seemingly perfect life, a great marriage, overachieving kids, a beautiful home, and a career. However, she's overworked, over-committed and exhausted to the point that she’s about to snap. Fed up, she joins forces with two other over-stressed moms—on a quest to liberate themselves from conventional responsibilities. They go on a wild, un-mom-like binge of long overdue freedom, fun and indulgence, putting them on a collision course with PTA Queen Bee Gwendolyn and her clique of devoted perfect moms.

What we thought:

All of us think that the world sees us in a specific way, and because of that we feel we have to live up to “the way the world sees us”. This is especially true when you’re a mom. We put unnecessary pressure on ourselves to be a certain way because we think that is what people want to see. This is however so far from the truth.

I think we all are so busy with trying to keep our own lives together that no one actually gives a shit about what other people are doing. Seriously, no one actually cares whether your kid eats wheat or not, or whether you’re raising your kid vegan or not, or whether your kid is wearing Naartjie or not. If your kid is happy and you’re not losing your mind making him or her happy, then that is all that matters, then you’re okay. Actually more than okay, you’re doing a great job!

This is the main message Bad Moms brings across. You have to let loose every now and then and you have to stop caring what other people think of you. It’s really okay to not have it all together all the time. Seriously, what is the worst that can happen if you don’t do the washing right this moment? Or if you don’t pack everyone’s lunch every day? Or if you don’t make dinner every night? The world will not end. IT. WILL. NOT. END.

And while the overall message of Bad Moms is really awesome, the movie does fall flat a bit in its execution. The storylines and the way they are being portrayed onscreen are at times over the top. The white-picket fence perfect mom, played by Mila Kunis, with the lazy husband who doesn’t help with anything related to the kids really feels a bit out of place for a movie in 2016. There’s also one scene where the three ‘bad moms’ totally lose their shit in a grocery store. They throw vodka down each other throats and eat cereal out of the boxes etcetera. It is just very unrealistic, doesn’t matter how drunk you are.

While lead actress Mila Kunis isn’t bad in her role, it just feels like she could’ve done so much more with it. A standout performance though is that of Kathryn Hahn, who portrays the single, slutty, drinking mom. You’ll laugh out loud at her comedy which is on point as it feels like she is improvising all the time. (WARNING: She has a NSFW potty mouth!) Kristen Bell is also worth a mention. Her conservative/nerdy take on the stay-at-home mom who is on the verge of a psychotic break is hilarious.

While Bad Moms won’t win an Oscar, it will provide a much-needed distraction and a laugh for a girls/moms night out. And it will make you feel like you’re the best mom in the world, even if you’re a 'bad mom'.
