WHAT IT'S ABOUT:
Vusi is a taxi driver with a beautiful wife and a roving eye - one that gets him murdered. Unfortunately for him, he has no idea he's dead, and the only person who can help him is a local nyope addict.
WHAT WE THOUGHT:
uHambo is a supernatural drama starring Siphiwe Mtshali (Vusi) as a murdered taxi driver whose spirit is trying to gain forgiveness from his wife Enhle Mbali (Zoleka) through a very unlikely medium – a nyaope addict – Thato Moeng (Zweli).
It's basically a version of the 1990 movie Ghost, but Mzansi style.
The drama touches on several themes, redemption after death, how people deal with grief, addiction and mental illness. The plot is formulaic with two subplots: another ghost who wants her murderer to be caught and a real estate agent/drug dealer who is after Vusi's money.
While the story is predictable, the suspense is in how it all unfolds which is exciting to watch, will Vusi get redemption? Will Zweli accept his gift? Will Zo see through Lerumo in time?
Simphiwe gives a nuanced portrayal of Vusi, a tough character to get behind, especially when even as a spirit he still doesn't get it. Eventually, his remorse and his love for Zoleka redeems the character.
Enhle gave a refreshingly honest portrayal of someone who is grieving. See Vusi cheated on her and was killed by his lover's wife. Zo struggled to grieve for someone who betrayed her in one of the worst ways possible. She questions whether when someone dies, are they automatically granted forgiveness?
Another theme worth mentioning is that of addiction in two moving scenes Zwele (Moeng) and Wawa (Xolani 'X' Nhlapho) talk about their addiction and how it helps them escape their depression. It brings humanity to the plight of addicts, and these characters.
If you're looking for a good movie to tune in to tonight, add this one to your list. It's a universal story of love, and redemption told in Mzansi's unique style.
