Kelly banned from SAMA’s
Mzanzi’s Afro-pop princess and flash queen Kelly Khumalo was left off this year’s South African Music Awards (Sama) list of nominees – because she co-owns the recording company ProKelly Entertainment, reports Sunday World. Sean Watson, SAMA CEO, would neither elaborate on the decision to snub Kelly, nor disclose the list of nominees. However a source explained that a representative from ProKelly will be one of the SAMA judges which is why Kelly could not be one of the nominees. Kelly was apparently quite hurt by the news she was unable to comment. But Prosper Mkwaiwa, her husband and business partner, says he doesn’t understand why Kelly was pulled off because the panel of judges includes executives from other recording companies. Mkwaiwa believes that recording companies, and Bonsai Shongwe’s Bonsai Entertainment in particular, are bent on destroying Kelly. “Shongwe should stop trying to drag Kelly’s name through the mud because her contract with both Bonsai Entertainment and Sarah Ink expired on February 14,” he says. Ag, Kelly has been exposed enough already. Maybe she should lie low for a while.
Afro-pop Umanji no more
The Sowetan reports that internationally acclaimed and award-winning musician Umanji, died early Tuesday morning from an Aids-related disease. Umanji aka Maruti Johannes Nkuna, died at the Zebediela Hospital in Limpopo from “pneumonia”. His younger brother, Andries Nkuna, said his brother would be buried in his home town on 8 March. Umanji became ill in 2006 with TB. When suspicious of being HIV positive arose he flatly denied it. But after a revealing exposé from a Sunday newspaper last year on his long-time fiancée being a former prostitute in Johannesburg, Umanji admitted that he was HIV-positive. He also made headlines when he claimed he had been sidelined from performances because of contracting the virus. He criticized the department of health and social development in Limpopo for not honouring their promise to make him an HIV-Aids ambassador. Manager Phil Hollies said: “We have lost a musician who contributed immensely to the growth of the music industry in the country.” Umanji’s death is exactly a week after another musician Zombo also died from an Aids-related disease.
