Grab your bat and your mitts Amazon Prime is rebooting the 1992 sports movie A League of Their Own as a TV series.

The movie, directed by Penny Marshall, is a fictional account of the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. It starred Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, and Lori Petty.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the hour-long series is a reinterpretation of the original film and was created by Abbi Jacobson - who will also star in it - and Will Graham.

The series will have the same spirit of the beloved movie and also explore race and sexually as it follows a new group of women carving their path in the league and outside it.

In a joint statement Abbi and Graham said: "Twenty-eight years ago, Penny Marshall told us a story about women playing professional baseball that up until then had been largely overlooked. We grew up obsessed with the film, like everyone else," reports Entertainment Weekly.

"Three years ago, we approached Sony with the idea of telling a new, still overlooked set of those stories. With the help of an enormously talented team of collaborators, an amazing cast, and the devoted support of Amazon to this project, we feel beyond lucky and excited to get to bring these characters to life.

"It took grit, fire, authenticity, wild imagination and a crackling sense of humour for these players to achieve their dreams. We're hoping to bring audiences a story with all of those qualities."

The cast includes Abbi, Chanté Adams, D'Arcy Carden, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Kelly McCormack, Roberta Colindrez and Priscilla Delgado. Molly Ephraim, Kate Berlant and Melanie Field will have recurring guest roles.
