Cape Town – Netflix's upcoming, third season, of The Crown is hotly anticipated.
It features Academy-Award winner Olivia Colman in the role of Queen Elizabeth and promises to involve more royal scandal than ever! But… there's one problem. The colour of Olivia's eyes.
You see, the actress' brown-eyes don't match the monarch's sky blue peepers. This created a bit of a logistical nightmare for the people behind the hit show according to a new profile in The Guardian.
The eye drama resulted in radical steps having to be taken to try and make art imitate life up until the smallest detail.
According to the profile, the first fix was the actress being fitted with blue contact lenses for the first four episodes, but it failed according to director Ben Caron because: "she was acting behind a mask".
Next, they tested turning her eyes blue in post-production with the help of visual effects. "But it didn't feel like her," Caron – who also has on other TV shows such as Sherlock and Wallander – said. He added: "CGI-ing her eyes seemed to diminish what she was doing."
Having tried all the options at their disposal, the team behind the show decided that it would be acceptable to have this small discrepancy between real life and what we've seen on the show before with Claire Foy's blue eyes.
After all, as casting director Nina Gold said: "The thing everybody loves about Claire was that she transmits her humanity in a very simple, plain, not-doing-anything kind of a way: you just get it. We felt that was exactly the same thing Olivia does. It's not about looks – it's about a quality."
How does Queen Elizabeth feel about having brown eyes in the new season? Well, we can't say for sure, but we do know that in a recent article in The Guardian – while speaking to Charlotte Higgins, the show's creator Peter Morgan admitted he often meets with the royal household – four times a year, to be exact.
We can't wait to see what brown-eyed Olivia does with the role when season three premieres on 17 November 2019!
