Cape Town – Hollywood kicks off its annual award season this Sunday night with the glitzy Golden Globe Awards.
South African born actress Charlize Theron is vying for the top prize in one of the most coveted categories, Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama.
Charlize is nominated for her role as Megyn Kelly in the biographical drama, Bombshell. The film is based upon the accounts of several women at Fox News who set out to expose CEO Roger Ailes for sexual harassment.
Although Charlize has been praised for totally embodying the real-life TV host, The Hollywood Reporter’s chief film critic Todd McCarthy predicts that Renée Zellweger might snatch the Globe for her role as Judy Garland in the film Judy.
Charlize is also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role and Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the annual Screen Actors Guild Awards taking place on Sunday, 19 January.

It seems like the 44-year-old actress is also on track to be nominated for an Academy Award this year. The nominees will officially be announced on Monday, 13 January.
Charlize took home the golden statuette in 2004 for her role as Aileen Wuornos in Monster and just two years later was nominated again for her role in North Country.
But, Charlize isn’t the only star from Mzansi we’ll be rooting for during award season this year.
Local comedian Trevor Noah scored his first Grammy nominee this year in the category Best Comedy Album for his stand-up comedy show Son of Patricia which is currently streaming on Netflix.
Trevor is also nominated for a Critics Choice Award in the Best Comedy Special for Son of Patricia.
In 2017 Trevor won both a MTV Movie & TV Award as well as a Primetime Emmy Award for his work as host on The Daily Show. In December Trevor made South Africans proud when he interviewed Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi on his hit talk show. (Watch that interview here)
