The adventures of Supergirl is coming to an end.

On Tuesday the CW announced that the superhero drama will come to an end after its upcoming sixth season. Production on the final 20-episode season is set to begin later this year, reports CNN.

The series starring Melissa Benoist first premiered on CBS in 2015 and then moved to the CW network.

The 31-year-old shared a tribute to the show on Instagram. She wrote: "To say it has been an honour portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless."

She added: "I'm so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store. I promise we're going to make it one helluva final season."
