- Peter Roos is one of the men vying for Qiniso Van Damme's heart on The Bachelorette SA.
- Unlike the other suitors, he has some history with her. They were in the same class in Grade 7.
- "I'm just glad she recognised me straight off the bat," says Peter.
"Let me tell you now, nervous doesn't even come close to how I felt," Peter Roos says about meeting the South African Bachelorette on the red carpet.
The 27-year-old is one of 15 men vying for Qiniso van Damme's heart, and the final rose on the first season of the African version of the dating reality show.
But it was not Peter and Qiniso's first meet cute, there's some history between them.
They went to the same primary school and were in the same class in Grade 7 in 2006. That was also the last time they spoke.
"I'm just glad she recognised me straight off the bat because that would have been an awkward situation if she didn't."
During the cocktail party, Peter and Qiniso had a moment to chat and he said to her: "Fourteen years is a long time."
If you're wondering if he had a crush on her all this time, well…Peter says: "I had a crush on her in primary school. But unfortunately, she had dated my best friend, so nothing ever happened between us back then. But if I could do things differently I definitely would have."
It's like something straight out of a romantic comedy, isn't it?
It's no surprise then that when it was announced that the model would be the first ever Bachelorette, Peter immediately wanted to enter.
"The moment I saw it was her, all the fond memories we had together came rushing back. I remember that she always stayed true to who she was and that she always lit up any room she walked into," he reminisced fondly.
And just like in primary school, Peter will have to compete with other suitors - 14 of them.
Speaking about that first cocktail party and meeting the other men he says: "The vibe was great. A bit of sizing up here and there but all in all, the gentlemen who were chosen, in my books, are top-notch."
This is not the first time Peter has gone on television to find love. He was also on First Dates SA. Commenting on how the experience differs, he says that with this show you need mental fortitude.
"In all honesty, being part of the Bachelorette is such a privilege to begin with so, in essence, a 10/10."
Just as this is Qiniso's journey to find love, it is also Peter's.
He says viewers can expect "a good laugh, a good cry and a whole lot of banter".
