Alec Baldwin has broken his silence after a film set accident that resulted in the death of one crew member and the injury of another.

The actor was on the set of the film Rust when he fired a prop gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and left director Joel Souza injured.

Hutchins, 42, was transported to hospital by helicopter but died of her wounds, while Souza, 48, was taken by ambulance and is receiving treatment.

"Mr. Baldwin was interviewed by detectives," Santa Fe sheriff spokesman Juan Rios told AFP.

Addressing the incident in a tweet on Friday, Alec wrote: "There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours."

The actor added that he was "fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred".

"And I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna," he continued.
