Hollywood star Anne Heche is reportedly in a coma following a car crash on Friday, a spokesperson told PA news agency.

The representative denied previous reports that Heche was in a stable condition, BBC reported.

"Shortly after the accident, Anne became unconscious, slipping into a coma and is in critical condition. She has a significant pulmonary injury requiring mechanical ventilation and burns that require surgical intervention," a statement read.

The 53-year-old actor crashed a blue Mini Cooper into a garage before driving off and ploughing into a two-storey house resulting in a massive fire.

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) confirmed that a female adult found within the vehicle had been taken to hospital by LAFD paramedics in a "critical condition". The home's occupant escaped unharmed.

"59 firefighters took 65 minutes to access, confine and fully extinguish the stubborn flames within the heavily damaged structure," an LAFD report stated.
