John Reilly has died. He was 84 years old.

The soap star's daughter, actor and TikTok personality Caitlin Reilly, confirmed the news on Instagram on Sunday, writing: "The brightest light in the world has gone out."

Alongside a photo of her father holding her, she said: "Imagine the best person in the world. Now imagine that person being your dad. I'm so grateful he was mine. I'm so grateful I got to love him. I'm so grateful I made it in time to hold him and say goodbye. I honestly don't know what I'm going to do, but I know he'll be with me."

The actor's career began in the 60s with smaller roles in Death Valley Days, Apple's Way and Gunsmoke, before he landed a role in As the World Turns replacing John Colenback as Dr Dan Stewart in 1974.

In 1983 he also appeared in Dallas, and went on to play parts in popular shows such as Beverly Hills, 90210 and Passions. But he was best known for his role as Sean Donely on General Hospital. He remained on the show until 1994, reports Variety, and reprised the role in 2008 and 2013.

The General Hospital Twitter account paid tribute to the actor following the news of his death.

"The entire General Hospital family is heartbroken to hear of John Reilly's passing," they wrote. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones."
