  • Prince William has broken his silence following Prince Philip's death.
  • The Duke of Edinburgh died on Friday, 9 April.
  • His statement comes shortly after Prince Harry's arrival in the UK ahead of the funeral service on Saturday, 17 April.

Prince William says while he will miss his "grandpa" Prince Philip, the late duke would have wanted the family to get on with the job.

The Duke of Edinburgh died on Friday, 9 April. Buckingham Palace said in a statement: "His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."

Now, via Kensington Palace, Prince William says in a statement: "My grandfather's century of life was defined by service – to his country and Commonwealth, to his wife and queen, and to our family.

The statement by the Duke of Cambridge, shared alongside a photo of Prince Philip and a young Prince George, reads: "I feel lucky to have not just had his example to guide me, but his enduring presence well into my own adult life – both through good times and the hardest days.

"I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her. I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour!"

The statement concluded: "My grandfather was an extraordinary man and part of an extraordinary generation. Catherine and I will continue to do what he would have wanted and will support The Queen in the years ahead. I will miss my Grandpa, but I know he would want us to get on with the job."

The statement comes following Prince Harry's arrival in the UK for Prince Philip's funeral service which is to take place on Saturday, 17 April.

Prince Harry, who is currently in the UK at Frogmore Cottage ahead of Saturday's funeral, wrote a tribute to his grandfather on behalf of him and his family, saying: "My grandfather was a man of service, honour and great humour."

He remembered Prince Philip for his "sharp wit" and someone who could hold the attention of any room "due to his charm".

"Meghan, Archie and I (as well as your future great-granddaughter) will always hold a special place for you in our heart," he wrote in the heartfelt tribute.
