Viola Davis has shared a first look at the American historical epic film, The Woman King, written by Dana Stevens and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.

The film is inspired by true events that took place in The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The first image shows Davis as Nanisca, General of the all-female military unit. The second shows Davis and her unit heading towards a battle.

The Oscar-winning actress captioned the post: "I'm deeply honored and excited to bring this incredible story of these badass female warriors to life. Get ready for THE WOMAN KING, exclusively in movie theatres this Fall!! [sic]"


The Woman King is currently filming in South Africa and stars John Boyega and several South African talent.

Former Miss South Africa and Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi will make her film debut alongside the likes of Thuso Mbedu, Masali Baduza, Seputla Sebogodi, Thando Dhlomo and Makgotso Monyemorathoe.

Sharing the news on Instagram, Tunzi wrote: "It is a completely new world and first time experience for me so I enter it with the utmost respect and humility. Forever grateful and looking forward. [sic]"


The Woman King is scheduled for a theatrical release by Sony Pictures in September 2022.
