Netflix has released the first trailer for Monster from executive producers John Legend, Nasir "Nas" Jones and Jeffrey Wright.

According to the streaming service's official synopsis, the film centres on Steve Harmon (Kelvin Harrison, Jr.), a seventeen-year-old honour student whose life changes when he is charged with felony murder. It follows Steve's dramatic journey from a smart, likeable film student from Harlem attending an elite high school through a complex legal battle that could leave him spending the rest of his life in prison.

Sharing the trailer on Instagram, John Legend wrote: "I'm excited to share this beautiful, emotional and important story with you all."

"What do you see when you look at me? A boy, artist, outsider, failure, thug? Should one moment define my life? asks Steve in the trailer.

The film also stars Jharrel Jerome, A$AP Rocky, Tim Blake Nelson, John David Washington and Jennifer Hudson.

Monster releases on Netflix on 7 May.
