  • Daniel Kaluuya plays activist and Black Panther leader Fred Hampton in a new biopic.
  • Judas and the Black Messiah is directed by Shaka King and produced by Ryan Coogler.
  • The film is set to be released in 2021.

"You can murder a liberator, but you can't murder a liberation, you can murder a revolutionary, but you can't murder a revolution, and you can murder a freedom fighter, but you can't murder freedom," says Daniel Kaluuya in a passionate speech in the trailer for Judas and the Black Messiah.

The Academy Award-nominated actor plays activist and Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton in the new film inspired by his life.

Fred rose to prominence when he became the leader of the Illinois chapter of the organisation in the late 1960s. He was killed on 4 December 1969 during an FBI raid of his house.

The film which tells the story of his betrayal and assassination also stars Lakeith Stanfield, Jesse Plemons, and Martin Sheen.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the film is not a straight biopic, as the writers took dramatic liberties in telling the story.

During the virtual NABJ-NAHJ Conference this week, director Shaka King spoke about casting the British actor in the role. After seeing Daniel's work in Get Out and Black Mirror, he knew of his talent reports the publication.

"Honestly, I knew he was the guy. I didn't know why he was the guy; I just knew. When I was finally introduced to him, and I sat down with him, it was only confirmed and reconfirmed because he has this certain gravitas to him that you rarely find in someone his age."
