"Train. Fight. Repeat."

This is what the cast of The Woman King lived while filming the historical epic on location in South Africa.

A new video, shared on Instagram by South African actor Thuso Mbedu, takes viewers behind the scenes of the hectic training schedule stars, including Mbedu, Viola Davis, Lashana Lynch, and Sheila Atim, had to stick to in preparation for the film.

"My body went through hell," Davis says at the start of the video. But that didn't take away from the fact that the actor felt like a "badass" from all the hard work.

"People think training is going to be, 'You just get a little bit strong to do a bit of stunts,' but for this…" says Lynch before Davis adds: "Three hours of martial arts training a day."

Mbedu also reveals: "Gina [Prince-Bythewood], the director joined us, and that helped bond us."

Inspired by true events that took place in The Kingdom of Dahomey – one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries – The Woman King centres on "the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca (Viola Davis) as she trains the next generation of recruits and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life".
