The coronavirus pandemic that abruptly scuppered film festivals – including kykNET's Silwerskermfees – has been both a curse and a blessing, forcing South African film productions to make their story worlds and casts smaller while allowing them to bring bigger film ideas to the celluloid canvas.
"The last two years have shown that the South African film industry is tenacious and determined to tell South African stories," Nicola van Niekerk, senior manager: M-Net scripted content, tells Channel24.
The 10th Silwerskerm Film Festival – an Afrikaans film festival nicknamed "Cannes in Cape Town" but not limited to just Afrikaans films and content – is bouncing back with a hybrid-offering in 2022.
