  • Twenty-one years after the invention of iTunes and the debut of the original iPod, Apple Music has gone from 1 000 songs in your pocket to 100 million songs on its streaming platform.
  • After more than two decades in business, Apple Music has realised the importance of "human curation" and "elevating artists' voices and providing opportunities for them to tell their own stories and contextualise their music".
  • One way to highlight this is through a new audio series that spotlights a different song every day, new or old, sharing its compelling story and particular and meaningful relevance to the day it is chosen for.

Twenty-one years after the invention of iTunes and the debut of the original iPod, Apple Music has gone from 1 000 songs in your pocket to 100 000 x that on its streaming platform.

But, what's in a number?

Apple Music's global head of editorial, Rachel Newman, discussed what 100 million songs actually means in a press statement.

"One hundred million songs – it's a number that will continue to grow and exponentially multiply. But it's more than just a number, representing something much more significant — the tectonic shift in the business of music making and distribution over these past two decades."

Newman also discusses the importance of "human curation" and "elevating artists" voices and providing opportunities for them to tell their own stories and contextualise their music".

One of the ways Apple Music is trying to capitalise on these aspects is with the new Apple Music Today series.

The new audio series will spotlight a different song every day, seven days a week. The daily song selection may be new or old, a well-known essential or a fan-favourite deep cut. The only thing the songs will have in common is a compelling story and particular and meaningful relevance to the day.

The series kicked off on Monday with the incredible story behind Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 U
