Ahead of the song's release, Gaga reflected on the writing process, saying, "When I wrote this song for Top Gun: Maverick, I didn't even realise the multiple layers it spanned across the film's heart, my own psyche, and the nature of the world we've been living in."
The singer-songwriter added that she had been working on the song for years.
"I wanted to make music into a song where we share our deep need to both be understood and try to understand each other — a longing to be close when we feel so far away and an ability to celebrate life's heroes."
Less than an hour before the song's release, Gaga shared who the song is for in a separate post on Instagram.
"I wrote the song for the incredible movie Top Gun: Maverick but also for people who feel like they’re not going to be ok … that life taught me through hard times to have faith in humanity when it’s hard to have faith in yourself."
