Sea shanties - it's the latest music craze on TikTok, and the man who started it has even landed himself a record deal.

Let's take it back to the beginning here.

Firstly, we don't need to tell you the massive impact that TikTok has on music these days. But we already did, and you can read about that here.

So what is a sea shanty? A sea shanty is a catchy tune that was typically sung by sailors in the 19th century while performing physical labour together.

When 26-year-old Nathan Evans posted his rendition of Wellerman, he had no idea the reaction it would get, going viral and spurring a trend that's hard not to sing along to.

According to Nathan, that's what shanties are all about - getting people to join in.

"I think that in these times when everybody's stuck at home, they're quite down, it's not been the best of times, so I think kind of in a weird way it cheers everybody up... It makes everybody feel united," he told NBC News in an interview.

Soon, everyone was getting in on the trend, including Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The viral trend even landed the TikTok star a record deal with Polydor Records. He explained in an Instagram video that he had quit his job as a postman to pursue his dream.

Nathan's rendition of Wellerman can now be added to your playlist after officially being released as a single by the star.

With many social media users now jumping on the sea shanty trend, rock band Nickelback decided to give it a go as well, joining the group The Lottery Winners to turn their track Rockstar into a shanty.

The sea shanty trend has once again proven the influence social media has on music. Jump on the right trend at the right time, and you may just find yourself topping charts across the globe. Or at least going viral on TikTok.
