The Weeknd had many of us confused when he rocked up to the 2020 American Music Awards in a full-face of bandages, but now the star has finally revealed the reason behind his look.

Speaking to Variety, the Canadian singer explained what the bandages, representative of someone who just went under the knife, actually means.

"The significance of the entire head bandages is reflecting on the absurd culture of Hollywood celebrity and people manipulating themselves for superficial reasons to please and be validated."

In his Save Your Tears music video, the star wears special effects makeup to create what some seems to represent the post-plastic surgery look.

"It's all a progression and we watch The Character's storyline hit heightened levels of danger and absurdity as his tale goes on," The Weeknd tells the publication.

Whether this new character will make an appearance at his Super Bowl halftime performance is still unknown.
