  • The MTV EMAs took place on Sunday 8 November, honouring the best in music.
  • Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the show, like every other major award show this year, was held virtually.
  • Artists like DaBaby, Little Mix and Doja Cat delivered incredible, over the top performances of their hits.

On Sunday 8 November the annual MTV EMAs honoured the best in music, going virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic.

SA artist Master KG walked away with the Best African Act award, while Lady Gaga took Best Artist, and K-Pop stars BTS took home the trophy for Best Song (see the full winners list here).

Even with no audience, organisers still made sure to give us some of the most over the top musical performances from some of our favourite artists. There were light shows, penthouses, pyramids and more.

Take a look at six of the nights best acts here:

1. David Guetta ft Raye - Let's Love

David Guetta and Raye went all out for their track Let's Love. The duo dazzled fans with a spectacular light show in Budapest. Not only that, the 80s inspired track was accompanied by futuristic holograms of dancers moving along to the tune. It's hard to look away from this one.

2 Doja Cat - Say So

Doja Cat took her upbeat pop tune, Say So, and turned it into a grungy rock track, and we love it. The star's performance started with her crawling out of a TV screen, reminiscent of the horror film The Ring, and then walking into a field of daisies where she joins a rock band to sing her track. This version of Say So also shows off Doja's vocal abilities with the muso hitting some huge notes.

3. Sam Smith - Diamonds

Sam Smith took over an abandoned theatre for their performance of Diamonds. The singer showed off their sultry dance moves, owning the stage with every sway of their hips. At the end of their performance, a powerful message popped up on screen: "Don't fuck with the queer kids."

4. Little Mix - Sweet Melody

Little Mix had everyone talking when they released the spicy video for their track Sweet Melody, so seeing them perform it live was a treat. One member short, the group turned a pyramid into their personal dancefloor as they put on a stellar show.

5. DaBaby - Rockstar/Blind/Practice

After an amazing performance at the MTV VMAs, DaBaby returned for the EMAs with a mash-up of his tracks Rockstar, Blind and Practice. The rapper turned into an actor for his performance which started off with him being arrested by a police officer as crowds whipped out their cell phones and recorded. He then moved into a courtroom where he was on trial, and finally walked out of the court and straight into a press conference.

6. Maluma (Remix with Aya Nakamura) - Hawái

Colombian singer Maluma was surrounded by beautiful city lights as he turned a penthouse into a nightclub for his performance. Aya Nakamura joined the singer for this fun video.

Catch the repeat of the MTV EMAs on 9 November from 18:00 on MTV (DStv 130) and again on 10 November on MTV Base (DStv 322) from 19:00.
