  • While it was initially supposed to take place at an indoor venue, last minute changes were made to the VMAs with performances filmed outdoors instead.
  • Performers on the night included Lady Gaga, BTS and Doja Cat.
  • With the help of technology, artists performed on incredible virtual sets, transporting us to different worlds.

While organisers initially had plans of making the MTV VMAs the first major award show to be held at a physical venue after the coronavirus outbreak, they later decided against this, citing safety concerns. Instead, host Keke Palmer had pre-recorded her segments, some winners accepted their awards virtually, and performances on the night were filmed outdoors.

But, that did not take away from the show. Artists brought their A-game, swinging from disco balls and transporting us to different planets, with incredible performances.

1. Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga's weird and wonderful performance was a mash-up of hits from her Chromatica album. Ariana Grande joined the singer for the first live performance of their track Rain On Me, and later played a piano made to look like a giant brain as she sang Stupid Love.

2. BTS

K-Pop group BTS lit up the stage with their record-breaking song, Dynamite. The band showed off their incredible dance moves as iconic New York settings were displayed on a screen behind them.

3. Doja Cat

For her performance, Doja Cat transported to "Planet Her". The singer danced alongside aliens on a breathtaking virtual set as she sang a mash-up of her hits Say So and Like That.

4. Miley Cyrus

Miley's first live performance of her new track, Midnight Sky, saw her pay tribute to her Wrecking Ball video. The singer climbed on top of a giant disco ball as she belted out the song.

5. DaBaby

Rapper DaBaby enlisted the help of masked dance crew, the Jabbawockeez, for a medley of performances that saw him arrested and performing in the backseat of a police car, before getting out and dancing on the roof of the vehicle as a virtual New York City went up in flames.

6. The Weeknd

The Weeknd took his Blinding Lights performance all the way to the top of the Hudson Yard’s Edge sky deck, which is over 300 meters high.

7. Maluma

Colombian singer Maluma entertained fans at a drive-in setup as he sang his track Hawái. The beautiful set was lit up with purple palm trees as the audience watched on from their cars.
