Motley Crue singer Vince Neil was taken to hospital on Friday after falling off stage while performing with his solo band at the Monsters on the Mountain festival in Tennessee, TMZ reports.

The singer stepped toward the edge of the stage during a performance, encouraging the crowd to clap when he fell into a crevice between a speaker and the stage.

Neil was taken to hospital, where X-rays had revealed he had broken his ribs.

According to Billboard, Neil's bassist, Dana Strum, made an announcement on stage after the incident, saying: "The truth is Vince fell and broke ribs when he fell. He can't breathe, and he's gonna get dealt with medically."

He continued: "He was so excited to be here. He lives in Tennessee. But he was willing to stick it out and tough it out when the people back here were telling him, 'Don't do it.' Let's have one good round of applause, please, for this guy."
