In this limited series hosted by Crushing On's Caryn Welby-Solomon, we explore TV from around the world.
In episode three, we head to Latin America, the home of the telenovela. The first telenovela was produced in Brazil in 1951; since then, it has become the largest cultural export from Latin American countries such as Mexico, Columbia and Brazil.
What makes a telenovela different from a soap opera is the series run length. A telenovela is one contained story that ends after about a year, while a soapie runs continuously.
From working-class melodrama, to romance, mystery and more - the storylines make for addictive viewing.
Welby-Solomon is joined by Lissette Lanuza, the Lead TV Features Editor at Comicbook Resources and the Editor-in-Chief of Fan-girlish, who shares her history with telenovelas and discusses how the genre has changed over the years.
