Maps Maponyane tells us about opening a third Buns Out and shares his favourite lockdown recipes

Nestlé Professional just launched its new plant-based range, Harvest Gourmet, and during a cookalong with Chef Jodi-Ann Palmer hosted by Maps Maponyane with guests including J'Something, we were lucky enough to try it!

We made the most delicious - no - sensational burger, and caught up with Buns Out co-founder, Maps, to find out how the new product's doing in-store.

"The Sensational Burger seems to be a hit," he says, while sharing his favourite lockdown recipes as SA hunkers down.

We love the Harvest Gourmet products! What has the response been like from Buns Out customers?

We have been getting a great response to the products so far! It's always exciting to give your customers food options that make them really consider what it is they're consuming, and change their minds on just how much you can do with meat alternatives, and the Sensational Burger seems to be a hit.

What is your favourite Harvest Gourmet product? How would you describe the products and range?

My favourite would be the Harvest Gourmet Sensational Burger. The burger patty is very tender and full of flavour, which initially catches you off guard knowing it isn't real meat.

I would describe the products as a well thought out range that's definitely conscious of providing healthy burger options and meat alternatives to consumers, which are packed with soy protein, iron and fibre. I know a lot of people would appreciate this range because I definitely love it.

Lockdown amid the pandemic has affected a great many people. How have things changed for you at Buns Out, and how's the new location doing?

We actually opened our third location this year in Norwood which is strictly halaal. The Norwood store has been doing well, and we're grateful for the tremendous support from the Muslim community. Unfortunately, we permanently closed our second location a week ago, which was in Rosebank. There were so many factors and challenges we experienced that lead to this decision, but we are still optimistic and hope that the two remaining stores in Norwood and Linden will continue being a success.

Can you share a few of your favourite lockdown meals with us?

Some of my favourite lockdown meals have been quick and easy meals such as lemon butter and garlic mussels, creamy prawn pasta, hot wings, homemade burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches and a variety of salads.

We're living in uncertain times. Are there any items you always make sure you have on hand?

Some of the items that I always have on hand is pasta, oatmeal, mixed nuts, tea, cayenne pepper, fresh vegetables, ginger, coconut milk, almond butter, chilli, honey, flour, avocado, butter and eggs.
