Johannesburg – The head-to-head challenges for the 2019 Miss World pageant have officially kicked off.
The contestants, representing countries from all around the globe, have been randomly divided into groups, with South Africa's Sasha-Lee Olivier placed in group four.
Each group then got to sit down with current Miss World Vanessa Ponce de Leon who questioned them about their Beauty with Purpose campaigns.
Speaking about her job as a teacher and her love for kids, Sasha-Lee touched on the importance of allowing children to express themselves through the creative arts while in school.
"The most challenging thing is actually being very much aware that the current system that we have isn't conducive to self-expression. It doesn't really celebrate the different types of intelligence we have. I'm aware of STEM-based education and how important that is, given the fourth industrial revolution, but I think until such a time where we get to a place where the arts are celebrated as much as STEM-based education we are doing our kids the greatest injustice. I feel like we're denying them a part of themselves," she said.
Giving more detail about her Beauty with a Purpose project, which seeks to provide comfort packs for sexual assault survivors, Sasha-Lee said: "There are many initiatives that are aimed at the physical nature of what sexual assault is, and there just aren't many involved in the emotional support and I think that's so necessary right now."
