Liezel van der Westhuizen braved Cape Town’s icy waters for a good cause.
On Thursday, the TV personality geared up and swam from Robben Island to Blouberg to raise funds for the NSRI Safety, Education & Survival Swimming Programme.
In a statement to Channel24, Liezel noted she and 33 other sea rescue volunteers set out on their "tough" adventure early on Thursday morning.
"We went out early with grey, misty conditions. The water was perfectly flat but 12 degrees."
Sharing more about the actual swim, Liezel revealed she had been preparing for 10 weeks. They left Robben Island at around 09:00 in the morning after first having to physically touch the island for their swim to be valid.
"The swim was tough. The boat drops you off about 100m from the island. You have to swim to the island, you touch, and then you swim all the way through."
Sharing more about why she and her fellow swimmers took the plunge, Liezel praised the Sea Rescue's Drowning Prevention programme.
"They go into communities and teach youngsters and members of the communities how to do basic life-saving skills, and water techniques and water safety skills. To be able to swim with 33 other sea rescue volunteers was just an incredible experience and amazing to be part of."
