Patrick Shai's life celebrated at memorial service

Actor Patrick Shai died by suicide on 22 January. 

"Shai was not just an artist; he was a legend, an inspiring figure beyond the arts fraternity, a change maker, and exemplary leader and a true activist and advocate against gender-based violence," The National Assembly Speaker, Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, and the National Council of Provinces Chairperson, Mr Amos Masondo, said in a joint statement.

"We are gutted and bitterly saddened by the loss of such a titanic and incomparable talent, an outstanding human being with a humble personality."

Patrick is best known for his roles in Soul City, Generations and Zero Tolerance.

He was nominated for a 2014 Safta in the category Best Supporting Actor for his role in Skeem Saam, and again in 2018 for his portrayal of Jacob Moloi in 7de Laan

A memorial service honouring the the legendary actor's life takes place at the Market Theatre in Newton from 12:00 - 15:00 on Thursday, 27 January.

Update: 12:19 - the service has been delayed by an hour and will start at 13:00.
