Ahead of the release of the penultimate season of The Crown, the drama received criticism from Minister John Major and Dame Judi Dench, who slammed the show for its "crude sensationalism" in an open letter.

But it seems the royal family had nothing to worry about as News24 reviewer Caryn Welby-Solomon writes in her review "that the fifth season does not have any pretence of being balanced anymore and fully goes towards sympathising with the royal family in a way that deeply impacts the storytelling efforts of the series."
