Roll out the plastic wrap, Dexter is back.

Seven years after packing away his knives Michael C. Hall will reprise his role as the blood pattern specialist by night and serial killer by day in a limited series for Showtime.

The network announced that a 10-episode series is in the works with the showrunner, Clyde Phillips also set to return, reports CNN.

Gary Levine, Co-President of Entertainment at Showtime said in a statement: "Dexter is such a special series, both for its millions of fans and for Showtime, as this breakthrough show helped put our network on the map many years ago.

"We would only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series. Well, I am happy to report that Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall have found it, and we can't wait to shoot it and show it to the world."

The original series ran from 2006 to 2013. Michael and John Lithgow have won Golden Globe Awards for their roles in the series.
