The Hlophes – a wealthy and very dangerous family- are set to shake things up on season 5 of 1Magic's award-winning telenovela The River.

The mafioso family of five is headed by a traditional patriarch named Bukhosi (played by Bheki Mkhwane), who is as quick with his brain as he is with his gun. He not only has a military past, which comes in handy for his work as a heist king, but he is also bold, outspoken, and charming. The man is made of steel and not one to cross.

Nomafu (played by Brenda Mhlongo) is his younger second wife. Despite her shiny and well-groomed exterior, she is a tough woman who clawed her way out of poverty – much like Lindiwe Dlamini-Dikana. She will become Lindiwe’s biggest rival yet.

Then comes the Hlophe sons - Mlilo (played by Vuyo Biyela) and Nkanyiso (played by Unathi Mkhize) – from his first marriage. The pair have a strained relationship with their father, and he wants them to take over the family business regardless. Mlilo is both nothing and everything like his father, but his younger brother is more ambitious and wants to wear the proverbial crown.

Lastly, daughter Khwezi is played by Tina Dlathu (real-life sister to Sindi Dlathu, who plays Lindiwe). Khwezi is intelligent, beautiful, and virtuous but also naïve and briefly joins the family business after they buy into Khanyisa Diamonds.
