  • Showmax and Actor Spaces have partnered for masterclasses aimed at aspiring actors.
  • The classes are aimed at opening up the industry.
  • Among the speakers in the masterclasses are Bonko Khoza, Thabo Rametsi, Mandla N., and Bokang Phelane.

Streaming service Showmax and digital and print publication Actor Spaces have partnered in a bid to open up the industry by hosting YouTube-based masterclasses.

The masterclasses are every second Thursday, from August to October. Each class will, within a week, be followed by an Instagram Live where aspiring actors will have the opportunity to ask the featured speaker follow-up questions.

"We're excited to be partnering on these masterclasses with Actor Spaces and some of Mzansi's favourite talents in front of the camera and behind it to help develop the next Bonko Khozas and Bokang Phelane," Multichoice's executive programming head Nomsa Philiso says in a press statement.

"Our Showmax originals have shown that wherever you go looking for talent in South Africa, you find it."

Actor Spaces founder and CEO Ayanda Sithebe says the partnership between them and Showmax speaks to their pillars. "The collaboration and support from Showmax on the masterclasses speaks to the pillars of Actor Spaces: showcasing talent, bridging the accessibility gap and our core of development."

The first speaker in the masterclasses is The Wife actor Bonko Khoza. In his masterclass, Khoza speaks about character development.

Khoza's Instagram Live is from 18:00 to 19:00 on 18 August on the Actor Spaces Instagram page.

The Wife casting director Ayanda Sithebe is the second speaker and will speak about the art of auditioning on 25 August. In his masterclass, Sithebe breaks down the journey and process of finding the real-life equivalents of the much-loved characters in the Dudu Busani-Dube books, from which the popular series draws inspiration.

Actor, producer, director, musician, and entrepreneur Mandla N. speaks about authentic directing during his masterclass on 8 September. The DiepCity and City Ses'la producer will share his experience of working on both sides of the camera, what drives his passion and how he creates authentic content.

Best Actor at the BRICS Film Festival as the lead in Kalushi: The Story of Solomon Mahlangu, Thabo Rametsi hosts his masterclass on constructing the background to your roles on 22 September. The Silverton Siege and upcoming Blood Psalms actor, who is moving into directing, will take a step back from acting to explain what happens on a film set and the importance of actors understanding the broader context of their performances.

Blood Psalms co-creator Layla Swart hosts a masterclass on shooting local series on a competitive international level on 6 October.

Justice Served actor Bokang Phelane hosts the last masterclass about playing the lead in the action-packed series Blood Psalms alongside a heavyweight cast that included Bongile Mantsai, Hamilton Dlamini, Hlubi Mboya, Mothusi Magano, Siv Ngesi and Warren Masemola on 20 October.
