Showmax has just released the first trailer for Skemerdans, the next Showmax Original, which will be available to binge from 28 April 2021.

Skemerdans is a Cape Flats neo-noir murder mystery set at the Oasis jazz club, the centre of a power struggle between two brothers, a scorned widow and an organised crime syndicate.

Mainly shot at the iconic Club Galaxy during the October 2020 lockdown, the 13-part half-hour series revolves around the Fortune family, played by SAFTA winners Kevin Smith (Isidingo), Ilse Klink (Isidingo), Brendon Daniels (Four Corners), Vinette Ebrahim (7de Laan); Carmen Maarman (Arendsvlei); Trudy van Rooy (Die Byl); and Ceagan Arendse (Suidooster), who died tragically in February 2021.

Co-director Ephraim Gordon said they wanted to show a side of Cape Town not usually seen. "When people think of Cape Town, they think of it as a compartmentalised world: certain people living here, certain people there. But Voortrekker Road is a place where different people are constantly moving through."

"We wanted to show that Cape Town is not just the mountain and the sea. We don't want to show the mountain or the sea. We want to show the inner city, the grittiness, and the bleak stuff, and the harsh light - not just the beautiful scenery," adds co-director Amy Jephta.
