Heather Tom, who plays Katie Logan on The Bold and the Beautiful, recently made soap-opera history by becoming the only actress in Daytime Emmy history to have won an award in all three categories – Outstanding Young Actress, Outstanding Supporting Actress and Outstanding Lead Actress.
She is also now tied for having won the most Daytime Emmys ever.
We spoke to Heather about her wins – and what it's like being back at work during a pandemic.
When we reach Heather, she's already on set, getting ready for her next scene. It's very early in LA, but that's her life, and has been since 2007, when she first started playing Katie on The Bold and the Beautiful.
Heather explains things are a little different now. "We go to work, get tested, and then there are all sorts of safety protocols on set. It adds a new layer to how we get ready and how we behave and how the hair and make-up rooms work."
Only certain people are allowed on set at any one time, and Heather says it's actually quite fun to see everyone in masks and shields. "The best thing is that we are a group of people who have worked together for decades and love each other and really want to take care of each other," she says. "We're willing to do whatever we can to stay at work and make sure that everyone is safe and healthy."
Covid-19 also played a role in how Heather accepted her Emmy this year, as the show was virtual. "It was kind of crazy to get the Emmy," she remembers.
All nominees had to record an acceptance speech beforehand, just in case, which Heather said was quite awkward. "I really didn't think I was going to win, so was even wearing the same thing I wore in the acceptance speech," she says. "I just thought, okay, it's clean and looks good on camera, but it wasn't super fancy by any stretch."
She says despite the awards being virtual, she still managed to have a good time with her fellow cast and crew members on an extended Zoom call. "It was FUN," she says, "but so strange. From Radio City Music Hall to my bedroom. The Bold and the Beautiful crowd really know how to party, even if it is virtually."
Heather feels her success in playing Katie is largely down to the writers always giving her such a lovely story, and she has such great material to work with. "I want to grow and change, and want my character to be dynamic," Heather explains.
"I like to look at a script and see what the challenge is for today. When you are doing something artistic and not growing and changing, then it's not fun. I want to wake up in gratitude and then figure out how I'm going to challenge myself that day."
She's very protective of Katie.
Heather directs as well as acts, not only on The Bold and the Beautiful but for some prime-time TV as well, and she's looking forward to expanding more into this role later this year. She's also doing some scriptwriting.
Somehow, in between all this work, she finds time to spend time with her husband and son, and they all love hiking, biking and swimming. "That's where my happy place is," she says. "With my dogs and my son, out on a trail somewhere."
The talented actor has visited South Africa twice and is keen to return. "I came first about 14 years ago with my mother, and we went on safari, and then again about two years ago. I loved it. I want to come back so badly."
So the big question is – will Covid-19 make its appearance in a Bold and the Beautiful storyline somewhere down the line? Probably not, says Heather.
"I really don't think people need more of it. Our show is more about fantasy, and it's a guilty pleasure about drama and romance – I don't think people want to see us running around in masks and social distancing."
But never say never. "Brad [Bradley Bell, executive producer and head writer] does like to tell a good story and reflect what is happening in society and the world, so you just don't know!"
The Bold and the Beautiful is on Eva (DStv 141) weekdays at 17:30 and 23:30 with a binge-worthy omnibus on Saturdays at 16:00 and Sundays at 23:00.
