The Crown actor Emma Corrin believes there are parallels between how Princess Diana and Meghan Markle are being treated by the press.

The 24-year-old will play the Princess of Wales in the upcoming fourth season of Netflix's award-winning drama. Prince Charles' (Josh O'Connor) romance and marriage to Lady Diana Spencer will take centre stage.

In an interview with Town and Country, she said: "You just want to shake these tabloids and say, can't you see history repeating itself?

"The coldness, the traditions, and the expectations of behaviour, I don't think [Diana] expected that. I think she expected to join a family," added Emma.

Prince Harry has been very open about his fears with history repeating itself. In October last year, he released a statement speaking out against the treatment Meghan has received from the British press.

In an ITV documentary, Meghan held back tears as she discussed how she struggled behind the scenes with the intense media scrutiny.

The Crown premieres on Netflix, Sunday 15 November.
