The Weeknd is crossing over to television in a drama by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson.

According to Deadline, the 31-year-old also known as Abel Tesfaye will star, co-write and executive produce The Idol currently in development at HBO.

The series will centre on a female pop singer who starts a romance with a Los Angeles club owner, a secret cult leader, reports Entertainment Weekly. Details of the Blinding Lights singer's role is still unclear.

The Weeknd's previous screen work includes voicing characters in a 2020 episode of Robot Chicken, appearing in and writing an episode of American Dad! and a cameo as himself in the Adam Sandler movie Uncut Gems.
