  • National Geographic is currently filming a new docu-special which will chronicle the heroic experts on the front lines to stop the next deadly pandemic.
  • Virus Hunters will be a companion special to National Geographic magazine’s November issue on Covid-19.
  • The special will follow epidemiologist and ecologist Christopher Golden and foreign correspondent James Longman as they join the urgent fieldwork of virus hunters who are currently posted in potential hot zones.
  • These experts warns that Covid-19 is only a "wake-up call" of what is to come if we don't act now.

National Geographic on Monday night gave media around the world the very first look at their latest docu-special titled, Virus Hunters through a virtual press conference.

Speaking from a bat cave in Mersin, Turkey the team behind the show shared a first look at what exactly it is they are working on.

"Let me show you one of the bats," said ABC News foreign correspondent James Longman as he turned his camera to a team member working behind him clutching a screeching bat in a gloved hand.

Virus Hunters, produced by American Broadcasting Company (ABC) News’ Lincoln Square Productions, will reveal the raw and chilling stories of those currently searching to identify the chain of events that could cause the next global pandemic.

James, who has seen the global ravages of Covid-19 first-hand, will use his investigative experience to find the answers to urgent questions the public is yearning for.

Together with epidemiologist and ecologist Christopher Golden he will embark on an epic journey across continents to meet with the brave scientists on a quest to not only understand and stop the Covid-19 outbreak, but also prevent the next deadly pandemic.

Their mission includes an attempt to connect the dots on culture, disease and the environment to discover the patterns that cause global health crises.

The team of heroic experts working on the front line warned that "Covid-19 is just a wake-up call" and that we "have to stop the next deadly pandemic".

The show will serve as a companion special to National Geographic magazine’s single-topic November issue on Covid-19.

Virus Hunters will air on National Geographic Channel in 172 countries in 43 languages. A South African airing date and time is yet to be confirmed.
