It has been three decades since South Africa was readmitted to international rugby.
To celebrate the momentous occasion, a panel was appointed by the Sunday newspaper Rapport to choose the top 30 Springboks of the past 30 years.
A documentary series which uses Rapport's list as a point of departure starts Monday, 19 December, at 20:30 on kykNET (DStv 144).
The series, Drie dekades se beste Bokke met Rapport, is divided into three episodes that will honour the chosen Springboks. Each episode is dedicated to the careers of ten exceptional players.
"The 30 Springboks were chosen by a selection panel put together by Rapport," said Dawie Boonzaaier, Rapport journalist and co-convenor of the panel. "They were all asked to give a ranked list of their top Springboks, and that is how we chose the top 30."
Albert Weideman of Rapport joined Dawie Boonzaaier as co-convenor.
Members of the panel included:
- Former Springbok coaches Jake White, Peter de Villiers, Nick Mallet and Carel du Plessis
- Former Springboks Errol Tobias, Wynand Claassen and Theuns Stofberg
- Assistant Bok coaches Mzwandile Stick and Deon Davids
- Former Cheetah coach Peet Kleynhans
- Journalists Hendrik Cronjé, Leighton Koopman, Bokkie Gerber, Vata Ngobeni, Simnikiwe Xabanisa and Brenden
- Rugby historian Albert Heenop
There is more than enough action to keep Springbok supporters glued to the screen, says the director of the series, Frankie Opperman.
