WHAT IT'S ABOUT:
Magic and mischief collide as half-human, half-witch Sabrina navigates between two worlds: mortal teen life and her family's legacy, the Church of Night.
WHAT WE THOUGHT:
When it comes to reimagining a show that many viewers remember from their childhood, the cast and crew walk a tightrope of high expectations and nostalgia. On one side, there are people who want just one more season of what they’ve always known, and on the other side, there are people who want a bigger, better version of what they knew.
The first people are the reason Fuller House exists, which is fine, but in my opinion, that type of reimagining is never as good as the original. It’s always a slightly pale comparison to what has come before it. That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy Fuller House or shows like it, I just think that doing something completely fresh and new like Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is way more exciting to watch because it turns everything I once knew on its head.
This much darker, Netflix original is filled with bloody thrills, spooky moments and scary villains, like the devil himself. With each episode, Sabrina and the entire town of Greendale step closer to a chilling finale. It features all the characters you know, but gives them more depth and more edge. Sabrina is as strong-willed as she always was, but there is also a darkness to her that is delicious.
Harvey is more than a sweet boyfriend who can’t see what’s right in front him, he’s a guy who is struggling to get a grasp on who he really is in relation to his family. Sabrina’s friends Rosalind and Susie also have their own backstories that slowly unravel until they become pivotal to the plotlines of the show.
One of my favourite characters in the show is Ambrose, Sabrina’s cousin, who offers her a shoulder to cry on and some sage magical advice when she needs it most. What is even better is that he offers the audience levity in the heaviest moments and has some great one liners. Another one of the highlights of the show is Sabrina’s frenemy, Prudence, who is a well-rounded adversary turned allie at times. While it’s important to think of all pop culture critically, I have to say that the faults of this show are not worth dwelling on.
I would highly recommend watching Chilling Adventures of Sabrina because it is one of my favourite new shows this year. It’s dark, thrilling and totally absorbing TV that doesn’t disappoint.
