Sebastian Price, the patriarch of the super-wealthy Price family is about to retire from the investment banking company he built. When he "mysteriously disappears" a power struggle between his ex-wife, his eldest daughter, his second wife and his son turn nasty leading to betrayal, secrets, lies and revenge.

After almost 10 years, M-Net is back in the game with a daily telenovela, and it was worth the wait.

Legacy has the opulence of Dynasty, the drama of Succession, with a uniquely South African flavour. There's something about watching a wealthy family unravel as they fight amongst themselves, that makes for very compelling viewing.

The main story is that of Felicity Price (Mary-anne Barlow) and her family. Felicity's one goal in life is to run the family empire started by her father. During an argument with her father (Deon Lotz), her lover Stefan (Sean-Marco Vorster) kills him. This sets her down a path in which she must cover up the murder, and in trying to maintain the seat of power in the company, she frames her stepmother (Kgomotso Christopher) for the murder. But things don't go as planned as factions within the company gain control and her family starts falling apart.

Twelve episodes in and it has already been a wild ride of plot twists and double-crossing, I can only imagine what else is in store for the Price family and those around them.

What I am enjoying about the show is that it is a fresh take into a world that has rarely been explored on South African television. The show is not afraid to tackle hot issues like white privilege, window dressing in companies, and even corruption. Did I mention that we are only 12 episodes into the show?

With this being a telenovela, the show is a slow burn as the character development and plot moves at a gradual pace. With that said, the last episode of the week does manage to end on a cliff hanger.

When it comes to the acting, Mary-anne Barlow is giving an outstanding performance as Felicity. At her core she loves her family, but her desire for power is so strong that she will stop at nothing to have it. Most of the characters in the show operate in the grey area, and I am looking forward to seeing how the characters develop and the dynamics that will come with it.

In an interview with Channel24 creator Phathu Makwarela said: "I think the first reaction from the audience is going to be 'Where has this show been?"

I can agree, Legacy is shaping up to be the telenovela I never knew I needed, and I can't wait to see what else is in store.

Legacy airs Monday to Thursday at 19:00 on M-Net (DStv 101)
