WHAT IT'S ABOUT:

Ten pairs of amateur gardeners from around the world push their skills to the limit as they compete to create stunning, supersized floral sculptures.

WHAT WE THOUGHT:

I didn't want to like this show but for some reason, I really got into it. The utter randomness of competitive flower arrangements is not something that generally interests me, but as with all competition reality shows, it's the contestants and hosts who make the show. Am I going to take up gardening or flower arrangement after watching this? Absolutely not.

The Big Flower Fight is another one of those British competition shows in which the prize is basically nothing (the winning team will have the chance to design and create a sculpture that will be displayed at London's world-famous Kew Royal Botanic Gardens).

The competition can be described as friendly. While there are no clear villains, you root for a team based on their excessive personalities or their sheer talent. But not everyone is a florist or even works with flowers. There are fashion designers, artists and sculptors. Some teams are wedding florists while others only work with indoor plants.

It's basically The Great British Bake Off with flowers, but I don't see this having the longevity of Bake Off. It will likely be added to the pile of other one- or two-season shows, such as The Big Family Cooking Showdown and Win The Wilderness.

The show starts with 10 teams of two and each week, the teams have to create giant sculptures using only a particular kind of plant. From fresh and dried flowers to edible plants, vegetables and grasses, the teams are challenged to create a themed sculpture that wows the judges.

The show is judged by Kristen Griffith-Vanderyacht, who we are told is the florist to the stars, and a guest judge every week, who has some expertise in the type of plant they are working with that week.

It is hosted by Natasia Demetriou (who can be seen in the very amazing What We Do In The Shadows on Showmax) and Vic Reeves (who I know from nowhere but has the best expressions when the contestants are making questionable choices).

The sculptures the contestants make are amazing, and the building can take up to 15 hours. They're building, carving, working with power tools and getting help from the on-site welders. Then they're planting and arranging and designing and sometimes, all this hard works makes me very tired and I'm happy to just be watching.

The Big Flower Fight is random but at the same time, somewhat magical and joyful. If you've run out of things to watch or you're waiting for a new season of your favourite show, then this truly isn't a bad way to spend the afternoon.
