BUSINESS

South Africans bought more durable goods such as vehicles, washing machines and computers in the first quarter of the year than in the previous quarter due to relatively low interest rates and accumulated demand, but the boom appears to have been short-lived.

According to economists, rising living costs are putting consumers’ disposable income under pressure and the slow implementation of economic reforms and persistent electricity cuts have been a serious blow to consumer confidence.
