If ever there was a case of (legitimately) subverting the will of the people, it was the pre-Jacob Zuma ANC leadership’s refusal to let Ace Magashule take the premiership of the Free State, despite his repeatedly getting the nod from party branches to lead.

Instead, national headquarters imposed a series of leaders with no popular base in the province’s membership.
