In what may become round two in the battle over the sale of alcohol, the industry has warned the government that reinstating the booze ban could have detrimental consequences for the economy and the fight against the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus.

Various government figures – including Health Minister Zweli Mkhize and several premiers – have stated they are lobbying the national command council to reconsider the decision to lift the booze ban under level 3 of the lockdown.

They have argued that trauma cases have risen since the June lifting of restrictions on the sale of alcohol, resulting in the clogging of hospital emergency units that are needed for Covid-19 patients.
