ANC spokesperson and former KwaDukuza Municipality mayor Ricardo Mthembu on Wednesday lost his battle against the Covid-19 coronavirus.

According to ANC insiders, the 46-year-old was admitted to hospital “a few weeks ago” and had been in the intensive care unit (ICU) and on a ventilator for at least a week.

According to an ANC biography of Mthembu, he “grew up in Macambini (Mandeni) and moved to KwaDukuza when he started his high school education. He became involved with the ANC at the young age of 16 and rose through the ranks to the position of ANC regional chairperson in 2011.”
