The competition evaluates news media companies across three segments: national brands, regional brands and media groups.

This year’s was the third virtual ceremony held since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. It is hoped that the next awards, to be held in New York, US, in May, will be a full-scale gathering.

Adspace24 took second place in the category for best multichannel client advertising campaign: groups for Lil-Lets Talk.

Netwerk24 came second in the best product iteration: national brands category for its re-platforming.

Since 1937, the awards have rewarded publishers and media houses for their excellence in innovation, as well as best practices by news brands in various categories, looking at best media products, advertising formats, and use of data and insights. This year, 854 entries from 252 news brands in 46 countries were received, and there were 332 finalists shortlisted. Participants covered newspapers, magazines, television, radio and digital media.

The win for the Absa/City Press Money Makeover Challenge comes at a great time, as the next instalment of the annual competition kicks off next week. From June 19, we will be able to follow the journeys of this year’s chosen contestants as they apply lessons on how to turn their finances around.

City Press personal finance editor Maya Fisher-French says the impact of the Money Makeover Challenge, not only on candidates but on the wider readership, has been immense.

I have readers sharing with me their own money makeovers that have been inspired by the Money Makeover journeys. This is an important project; it is changing lives. A big thank you to City Press and Absa for continuing to support it.

Gayle Edmunds, head of content at Adspace24, explains how the challenge adds value to both clients and readers.

We don’t do the work we do for the awards, but rather for our readers and clients. However, it’s such a delight to also be recognised by our peers for the work we do to tell stories that resonate with our audiences while helping our clients share their know-how, adding value to the lives of the communities we serve.

Eight of Media24’s editorial, product and advertising projects received honourable mentions.
